How to select the right screen for your own laptop?

Posted by: Ecomer In: LCD Screen Repair ()

Sizes and resolutions ,backlight type decides the model of  laptop LCD screen. The laptop LCD resolution should not be upgraded or downgraded. Before choosing a screen, please according to your laptop in SIZE , in RESOLUTION and in BACKLIGHT TYPE, order the right screen.

1. Screen Size Measurement.

Screen size is measured in inches diagonally from corner to corner as you can see in the picture below.

TIPS:1 inch=2.54 cm.

screen21

The following is different standard for different laptop screen:

lcd

2.Resolution Matters.

NOTE: Laptop LCD resolution should not be upgraded or downgraded, otherwise LCD Cable & Inverter will be burnt.

We recommend  customers to buy the same LCD resolution as they have.

You can find the LCD resolution of your Laptop by the following way:

For Windows XP or older: go to Start -> Control Panel -> Display Properties

For Windows Vista: Right-Click on Desktop -> Graphics Properties

Here is some common used reference for you:

XGA

1024 x 768

WXGA

1280 x 800

WXGA+

1440 x 900

SXGA

1280 x 1024

SXGA+

1400 x 1050

WSXGA

1280 x 854

WSXGA+

1680 x 1050

UXGA

1600 x 1200

WUXGA

1920 x 1200

Or you can use on-line check service, please note that the on-line tool tells your screen resolution and it only makes sense if you did not change factory default screen settings in Windows or Mac OS.

On-line Resolution Check.

3. Backlight Type.

Generally, there are two types of backlight in the market, CCFL  and LED backlight. CCFL(Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp) needs an inverter, but LED backlight needn’t, which uses light-emitting diodes as a source of light.  Now the used most is CCFL backlight.  As we know that desktop has double or three backlight for the monitor brightness, but taking account of power issue, notebooke screen brightness is reduced, so most of notebook screens only use  Single backlight, especially in small size, and some use Dual backlight.

Single backlight, only one bulb with only one inverter connector in the screen, most used in the market.

macbook-pro-laptop-screen1

So Dual backlight means: two bulbs in the screen with two inverter connector, not so much used.

sony-laptop-screen-lcd

LED backlight is a new type, used in some latest models. Led screen only has one socket to connect a video cable, no inverter cable. Usually, users can find the specifics in its laptop if using a LED screen.

macbook-pro-laptop-screen

NOTE:

There are mainly two types of LCD screen on the market, Matte and Glossy screens.  In order to scatter reflected light on the LCD screen surface, there’s a anti-glare finish on Matte screens. And Glossy screens remove the optical coating, increasing a highly reflective coating, that will effectively improve the performance of contrast and color.   So Glossy screens are better for graphics and video display. Matte screens are beneficial to eyesight protection, especially work for a long time.

HERE comes a diagram for different companies call its own glossy screens:

You cannot find the the code ‘WUXGA’, that’s because it does not have the code in the system, but the referrence of 1920×1200. If you can find the resolution 1920×1200, that is alright. And you can find what you want here.

Hello, Vic!
CCFL and LED backlights are different types. CCFL uses fluorescent bulb(s) to light up the image and need a high voltage inverter to supply power. LED doesn’t require an inverter and uses light-emitting diodes as a source of light.
CCFL backlight comes in single bulb backlight and dual bulb backlight. So single backlight means that there is only one bulb, that lights up the screen and the screen has only one inverter connector. And dual backlight has two bulbs in the screen and the screen has two inverter connectors.

Thanks for the tips!

I have a question, though… do you think it would be possible to “upgrade” a screen from something with a CCFL back-light to something with an LED back-light?

From your guide it sounds like you can just rip out the inverter and drive the LEDs (in a new screen of the same size and resolution) from the video cable. Are there different numbers of pins between the two?

I’m asking this because my laptop is old enough that I don’t want to replace the screen unless I feel like I am getting something “extra” for it.

32 | Ecomer

June 28th, 2009 at 8:08 pm

Avatar

There is no way to upgrade from CCFL backlight to LED. LED and regular laptop screens aren’t interchangeable. They require different connectors and power sources. To upgrade your laptop to LED screen, you’d have to replace your laptop’s motherboard.

Dell laptop screen backlight may be different according to customer’s request with one or two CCFL bulb. But they cannot be mixed, one CCFL bulb only works on the laptop that has one inverter connector. So does the two CCFL bulb backlight.

hello, i am trying to determine the best replacement screen for the dell inspiron 1545. after much research i am finding two possiblities i believe. the first being the LTN156AT01 and the other is the LTN156AT02. the only difference i can find is price. can you advise me of the difference between these two models and which is best recomended for my laptop.
thank you

101 | Ecomer

December 6th, 2009 at 7:39 pm

Avatar

The difference is backlight type between LTN156AT01 and LTN156AT02. CCFL is for LTN156AT01, and LED backlight is for LTN156AT02. LED is Brighter, thinner and uses less power than CCFL. You need to check the backlight type as you replace the screen. LED cannot be used in a LCD screen with CCFL backlight.

Hi, I have an HP Pavillion dv 5000, screen size is 15.4 x 13.1. The display screen will come on briefly but then goes dark after wierd color.
I tried to research the resolution and back lighting but have lost the paper work and only way I can get it to work is to hook up a separate display monitor.

other numbers on lap-top say Hp dv 5224nr and graphics by ATI radeon express 200M. these are factory stickers on front; the model number on back is dv5000

Can you recommend the correct screen?
