It was indeed a sight to behold at the Liberty Science Center, where Acer launched over 20 products, including a very sleek-looking laptop line, called Timeline, which starts at $699 and are about an inch thick. The now-mega company, which consists of Gateway and eMachines (and Packard Bell, for emerging markets only), also launched two netbooks, one 10.1-inch to compete with the current flood of inexpensive portables, and an 11.6-inch netbook with discrete graphics and specifically designed for better video streaming.

The Timeline is Acer-branded and consists of three form factors: 13.3, 14, and 15.6 inches. They measure 1.12, 1.14, and 1.17 inches in thickness and weigh 3.5, 4.2, and 5.3 pounds. All three configurations have 16:9 aspect ratio screens and tout long battery life (8 to 10 hours, according to Acer) and range in price from $699 to $899. Acer is also claiming that Timeline notebooks will run cooler than most, up to 5 degrees C. The systems will come with both SSD and HDD options.

The netbooks are also slim and very sleek. We only got a few minutes with the 11.6-inch system, but we were impressed with its 1366×768 resolution, which is unheard of for a traditional netbook. We’re pleased with the overall design, the multitouch touch pad, and the decent keyboard, which includes all the keys in the right spots. The mouse controls are a little small and combined into one long button beneath the touch pad.
