Troubleshooting on laptop screen backlight issues

Posted by: Ecomer In: LCD Screen Repair ()

The laptop repair often comes with the screen issues. The laptop LCD screen is black, but an external monitor works fine on laptop.

To identify what the problem of the LCD screen is, we often make a test first. Connecting the laptop to an external monitor, if it works fine, then we know the video card is in good condition. It means that the screen still gets data signal from the video card, but for some reason the backlight lamp doesn’t work.

About the backlight issue, we need to know what cause the problem. At first, let’s check the lid close switch. The lid switch is a small button close to the LCD screen. If the lid swith cannot move freely or be dirty, it may get stuck inside the laptop and cut off the power from the inverter board. We know that the inverter board supply power to light up the backlight lamp. If it cannot work, so does the backlight.

Except the case, let’s check the inverter board. The screen is black, but there’s still an image on it. The problem is most likely on it. If not like this, please connect another inverter board. Replacing a new inverter board, but the screen is still dark. Then the problem is not related to the inverter board.

replace inverter board

Now let’s make the last test, disconnecting the old backlight and replacing another backlight to the inverter board. If the new one works well, then there must be some problems with the backlight lamp. Please make sure the connector on the backlight lamp is similar to the connector on your LCD screen.

As we find out the problem, we just need to replace the backlight.

I bought a CLOVO ATOM Notebook with 10″ screen. My son dropped the Notebook and the screen brok from top left corner. Otherwise the screen wud boot and display in other parts was very much visible but I thought of replacing the screen myself if I cud find an exact replacement screen. I searched and found the Hannstar HSD100IFW1-A00 screen and replaced the orginal. When I was replacing the screen I did see the window XP bootup screen. After I switched off and when I tightened all the nuts the system wud all bootup but the screen will be either black or wud show window screen but in a very dark background as if the brightness has been dimmed. I reopened the notebook and tried the original screen even that LCD screen has the same issue. The laptop boots well and shows all display when connected to external Monito. I tried checking the invertor card but cud not locate it neither on LCD panel nor anywhere around motherboard where the Video cable gets connected on motherboard. Can anyone guide me about the solution to the problem? I am just wondering what cud be the problem???….  (Quote)  (Reply)

There may be a problem in your backlight. Please reconnect the backlight and the screen.  (Quote)  (Reply)

After replacing A089SW01 by B089AW01 black LCD screen (no backlight, with flashlight from behind image is faintly visible). The broken screen has still clear (broken) image.
Does the B089AW01 consume more power?
If it is the backlight how to replace? Or integrated in these LCD displays and replacement not possible?  (Quote)  (Reply)

Solved,
Gently brushing the contacts with a tiny screwdriver, connectting-disconnecting 4 or 5 times and finally gently making connetion again, and suddently the backlight started!
Thus B089AW01 v2 is compatible.

Hi, My problem is a little different than any I have read. My Dell Vostro 1500 works fine on battery. When I have it running on AC, it will run fine for a period of time and then the backlight will go out. I can see a faint view of the screen. I am unable to check on another monitor since I am on a ship right now. If I close the lid, wait until the computer goes to sleep, when I open the lid the screen is fine. It will continue to work for another period of time and then again get dark.

I have run it now for 2 hours on battery and have not had any problem. When I then plug it in to power, it will very quickly, 3-4 minutes, go dark.

Any ideas?

I dropped my almost three year old notebook. The right side of the screen looks cracked and I see a double and flickering image on the bottom half of the screen. The top half is as it should be, and is as bright as it was before I dropped it.

I know I need a new screen, but how do I test to determine whether I need to replace the inverter and/or the backlight? Or is it just wise to replace the backlight and even the inverter when I replace the screen?

Thank you,  (Quote)  (Reply)
