laptop screen

Laptop screen is the basic device of a laptop. With an appropriate screen, you can work comfortably. When you want to choose a laptop screen, you may take the screen size, screen resolution, aspect ratio and backlight into consideration.

Screen Size

Netbook screens’s size is usually from 7 to 10 inches, while  most notebooks have screens between 12 and 18 inches.  If you plan to move your laptop frequently, I recommend a screen from 12 to 14 inches for laptop, and 10 to 12 inches is good for netbooks. It’s a decent compromise between size and weight. If your laptop is usually put on your desk, then you can choose a screen with larger size.

Screen Resolution

The number of pixels displayed on your screen at once is referred to as its resolution. A screen’s resolution is usually described in two numbers: Its width and its height, in pixels. For example, if your screen has 1,024 pixels from its left edge to its right and 768 pixels top to bottom, its resolution is said to be 1024×768. Resolution does not depend on physical size; a small screen capable of high resolutions might be able to display more pixels than a larger screen.

If you want have a good near vision, you maybe need the screen with higher reslution, if you want to see big text, you may want to consider the standard screen,or a cheaper model with a lower resolution. The following message of laptop screen sizes and the resolutions that are often displayed on the screen. It may help you:

Screen Resolutions LCD Sizes(inches) Megapixels
800×600 (SVGA – standard) 12 0.48
1024×768 (XGA – standard) 12, 13.3, 14, 15 0.79
1280×800 (WXGA – wide) 12.1, 13.3, 14.1, 15.4, 1.02
1440×900 (WXGA+ – wide) 14 1.30
1280×1024 (SXGA– standard) 14, 15, 15.7 1.31
1400×1050(SXGA+–standard) 12.1, 14, 15 1.47
1680×1050 (WSXGA+– wide) 15.4 1.76
1600×1200(UXGA – standard) 14, 15, 16 1.92
1920×1200 (WUXGA – wide) 17, 15.4 2.30

Aspect Ratio

Screen resolutions are usually in widescreen aspect ratios of either 16:10 or 16:9. The 16:9 aspect ratio screens show widescreen movies in their native aspect ratio, and  there is no need for the black lines at the top and bottom of the screen. And the resolution of the 16:9 aspect ratio screens is usually 1366 x 768, 1600 x 900, or 1920 x 1080. If you see more Web pages or read more of your word processing documents without scrolling, the 16:10 screens is a good choice.

backlight

There are usually two types of backlight :CCFL and LED backlight. If you want to have longer battery life, the LED backlight can help you in that LED-backlit LCD screens are brighter and consume less power.LED backlight is a new type, used in some latest models. LED screen only has one socket to connect a video cable, no inverter cable. Usually, users can find the specifics in its laptop if using a LED screen. While CCFL(Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp) needs an inverter, and they are cheaper and more widespread.
